Let’s set the scene…
England, 1952. Since time immemorial, the village of Pokeingham-Softly-on-the-Wold has gathered on All Hallows’ Eve for a celebration.  This tiny English village is rich in folklore, and the villagers believe that by lighting the fires, drinking the local cider and singing and dancing ‘til dawn, they will ward off evil spirits for the next twelve months. Traditionally, the Hallowe’en Ball (as it has become known in recent years) is held at Pokeingham Hall.  The medieval great hall at the centre of the manor house has just the right atmosphere; its ancient beams creaking as they are warmed by the two enormous fireplaces.  At the North end is the Minstrel Gallery where the musicians will play traditional Pokeingham folk songs, at the South end, the stage from which Lord Pokeingham traditionally performs his rendition of the popular song ‘Diddle Diddle Dumpling’, accompanied by Lady Pokeingham on the Hammered Dulcimer. This year, however, is different; Lord Pokeingham is dead.  Despite His Lordship’s recent passing and the fact that the funeral hasn’t yet taken place, the Hallowe’en Ball will go ahead as planned, but this year it will be a much more solemn affair as Lady Pokeingham and the village are in mourning. Mystery-writer and amateur sleuth Miss Mapletree returns from an overseas trip and raises concerns about Lord Pokekingham’s death, but is she right to cast suspicion on someone in the village?
