The English Civil War

Step through the gates of Hartlebury Castle and into the midst of the Civil War

Experience history brought to life by the largest re-enactment society in Europe! The Sealed Knot are taking over Hartlebury Castle with over 200 re-enactors and transforming it into a Royalist garrison. Meet 17th century characters, watch demonstrations and have a go at being a pike soldier, before following the Royalist company to the feature event – The Battle of Hartlebury.

Garrisoning the Castle

Soldiers will greet you, but who do you support the King or Parliament? Throughout the Civil War the Royalists held the Castle for King Charles I, so expect to see guards at entrances and taking up residence in the Great Hall.

Living History

The Carriage Circle will be a hive of activities with living history tents, cooking, embroiderers, pole lathing and armoury cleaning, among others. Meet 17th century characters as you watch fascinating demonstrations and discover more about living in the Civil War. Speak to off duty soldiers, try on their armour, and challenge them to a traditional table top game or two.

Battles & Combat

Witness the spectacle, as a skirmish breaks out against the two armies. Follow the Royalist soldiers as the march from the Great Hall to the battlefield, and listen to the fascinating commentary as you see the cannons, muskets and pikes in action and learn about battlefield combat. Discover more about the weaponry during the day as you enjoy Drill Displays and have a go in the pike drill yourself!

Fun for families!

Enjoy a full family day out, as you follow the children’s quiz around the encampment, dress up as a soldier and enjoy traditional games including skittles, quoits and kubb. There lots for children and adults to enjoy throughout the event and don’t forget to also pop down to our adventure playground!
