The English Civil War

Step through the gates of Hartlebury Castle and step into the midst of the Civil War

Experience history brought to life by the largest re-enactment society in Europe! The Sealed Knot are taking over Hartlebury Castle with up to 200 re-enactors, tents, canons, muskets, crafts, cooking demonstrations, games, dress up, public pike drills and more.

 Garrisoning the Castle

Soldiers will greet you, but who do you support the King or Parliament? Throughout the Civil War the Royalists held the Castle for King Charles I, so expect to see guards at entrances and taking up residence in the Great Hall. Explore the Bishop’s House and County Museum and learn about the history of this beautiful site and county.

Living History

The Carriage Circle will be a hive of activities with living history tents, cooking, demonstrations, embroiderers, pole lathing and armoury cleaning, among others. Engage, ask questions, and join in various activities across the site.

Battles & Combat

Watch on as the skirmish breaks out against the two armies and listen to the fascinating commentary. Enjoy the Drill Display with pikes, muskets, drums and colours, cannon, and cavalry. During which you will learn about how each arm was used and the basics of battlefield combat.

Food and drinks will be available to purchase both on site and at Hayley’s Kitchen.
