Hartlebury Conversations

If you believe, as we do, that a thousand years of history shaped by power, politics, religion and social change can help us better understand our world today, then Hartlebury Castle invites you to become part of the conversation.

Hartlebury Castle is not simply a historic house.

For more than a thousand years it has been a place where great forces have shaped society through real lives. Within its walls, bishops exercised authority, ideas were challenged and defended, and decisions connected to national events were made.

Alongside these stories of power are those whose voices were less often heard: the servants, workers and communities whose lives formed the fabric of daily life.

Together, these stories remind us that history is neither simple nor settled.

They speak of leadership and service. Inclusion and exclusion. Courage and conformity. Progress and injustice.

Most importantly, they remind us that history still has something to teach us, if we are willing to engage with it honestly.

Our ambition is not simply to preserve Hartlebury Castle as a monument to the past.

It is to establish it as a place where history helps us understand the present and inspires us to shape the future. A place where people encounter different perspectives, ask better questions and explore the relevance of history to contemporary life.

That ambition is taking shape through three transformational projects:

Creating a New Surround – restoring the historic moat and reconnecting the Castle with its landscape and identity.

The Power of Ideas – researching and presenting the nationally significant Hurd Library as a living centre for scholarship, learning and public engagement.

The Speaker Series – bringing leading thinkers, historians and public voices together to explore the questions that continue to shape society today.

Together these projects represent something much bigger than individual initiatives. They are part of a long-term vision to ensure Hartlebury Castle becomes one of Britain’s leading places for reflection, learning, dialogue and public engagement.

We believe ambitions like this are built not only through financial support, but through people like you.

People who believe that heritage should be lived with, not simply looked at.

People who believe thoughtful conversation matters.

People who understand that philanthropy is about helping shape the future, not simply preserving the past.

That is why we are inviting people to become part of Hartlebury Conversations.

Hartlebury Conversations is a community of people who believe in the power of history to illuminate the present, the importance of dialogue in shaping the future, and the privilege of using philanthropy to make lasting change possible.

Joining the Conversation

We invite you to become a Founding Member of Hartlebury Conversations and help provide the confidence and continuity needed to realise this long-term vision, ensuring Hartlebury Castle can continue to evolve for generations to come.

This commitment takes the form of a regular philanthropic donation of £150 each month.

In return, members become part of an engaged community that shares the Castle’s ambition and enjoys unique opportunities to experience its future as it unfolds.

As a member of Hartlebury Conversations you will be invited to:

• An exclusive annual dining experience within the walls of Hartlebury Castle, bringing together fellow members, trustees and invited guests for thoughtful conversation and insight into the Castle’s future.

• Garden parties and drinks receptions throughout the year, offering opportunities to meet others who share a belief in the importance of heritage, philanthropy and public dialogue.

• Exclusive updates and behind-the-scenes insight into the Castle’s transformational projects, future ambitions and the impact your philanthropy is helping make possible.

• The opportunity to introduce others who may wish to become part of the conversation and help shape Hartlebury Castle’s next chapter.

As a UK taxpayer, your generosity can go even further. Through Gift Aid, every donation enables Hartlebury Castle to reclaim an additional 25% from HMRC at no extra cost to you. Higher and additional rate taxpayers may also be able to claim further personal tax relief through their Self Assessment tax return.
